Someone asked me about the use of stringed instruments in church services and I want to give some of my thoughts on music in the church today. I am very much a believer in using musical instruments as aids to worship. Even in the perfect worship of heaven they use harps to aid their praise to God Revelation And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. See All And, "the anointed cherub that covereth" Ezekiel Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Unfortunately, when Satan the anointed cherub fell, he brought his musical ability with him. Since that time, music has been a powerful force in man whether used by God or by the devil. This forces us to use all of our spiritual discernment and God-given judgment to determine what is and what is not proper worship music.

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matthew 11:15)
Churches of Christ love music. Singing is a prominent—and favorite—part of each service. Most congregations dedicate a Sunday night each month to learn new songs and to sing old favorites. Annual singings can draw thousands of people.
So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance. It came about when he had arrived, that he blew the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was in front of them. Zadok the priest then took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Praise Him with trumpet sound; Praise Him with harp and lyre. The first sounded, and there came hail and fire, mixed with blood, and they were thrown to the earth; and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up. The second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood, and a third of the creatures which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the ships were destroyed. The third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of waters. The name of the star is called Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the waters, because they were made bitter. The fourth angel sounded, and a third of the sun and a third of the moon and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a third of it, and the night in the same way.
Question: I believe that using musical instruments in church is wrong because we have no examples of using them for worship in the New Testament, and I believe the NT to be the only authority on how we should worship God the Father and Jesus. We cannot use Old Testament Scripture to guide us in New Testament worship, because, if we did, we'd still be doing animal sacrifices. The old law ended when Jesus died on the cross. Since the NT is silent about using instruments in worship, we should not use them. But so many people try to use Psalm to justify using instruments in worship Should we ban musical instruments from our church services? Shouldn't we let the Bible be our guide? Answer: I've never dealt with an issue that draws so much lightning as does music in the local church. I've joked for years that if our enemies really wanted to get rid of Christianity, all they'd have to do is put every Christian in the same room for a few weeks.
